Purpose - To neutralize a basic solution.

Materials - aluminum foil, 6x6 inch (15x 15 cm)turmeric strip (prepared in Experiment 119)

2eyedroppers

limewater(prepared in Experiment 118) vinegar

Procedure

■ Place the aluminum foil on a tableand lay one turmeric strip in the center.

■ Add two drops of limewater to theend of the turmeric strip.

■ Fill the second eyedropper withvinegar.

■ Add two drops of vinegar on thesame end of the turmeric strip.

Results Limewater turns the turmeric paper red. Thevinegar drops change the red color of the paper back to yellow.

Why? Limewater is a baseand vinegar isan acid. The combination of an acid and a base produce new chemicalsthat are not acidic or basic. The basic lime-water causes the turmeric paper toturn red. The drops of vinegar remove the basic limewater by changing it to anonbasic chemical.
